Norelli caps 18 years in the N.H. House
PORTSMOUTH – Terie Norelli’s last official duty as speaker of the New Hampshire House was overseeing the orientation of new legislators. That was over a two-day period Nov. 20-21.
Eighteen years ago almost to the day, Norelli herself was a freshman legislator, a newly elected Democratic representative from Portsmouth.
“I absolutely remember the day – it was overwhelming,” Norelli said. “It’s everything you need to know, but won’t remember about what life is going to be like in the State House.”
Her last day as speaker – and her last day as a state representative – is Tuesday, Dec. 2. The new Legislature will be sworn in the next day without Norelli, who didn’t run for re-election.
Norelli looks back on her 18 years in Concord with pride in what she accomplished personally as the first Democratic woman speaker of the House in the state’s history, the first Democratic speaker in 84 years. She looks back with pride politically on legislation that legalized gay marriage, expanded Medicaid and established kindergarten in the public schools.
