    I wanted to find out more about the extraordinary life of actor Robert Newton, and this was the only biography available. The reviews on Amazon were not particularly kind, and I would agree with the criticisms about the lack of photos (surely what you want from a show-biz biography!) and the tendency to go off on a tangent. Pages of barely-relevant context could have been cut down significantly with the help of a good editor. The author has clearly researched the Newton's career well, from the evidence of play-bills, newspaper articles and show-business autobiographies. But despite his claim to have assistance from Newton's son, what it really lacks is a sense of Newton's character from those who knew him, from first-hand accounts. As a blow-by-blow account of drunken incidents, infidelities and abandoned wives it is no doubt fairly accurate. But Newton was clearly much more than his misdemeanours: we gain little sense of what made him tick, how he created his memorable screen characters, the quoted erudition of a man who was a friend of famous artists and writers and had a marked talent for spotting a good play or idea for a film.     Born in Orange, Massachusetts to Charles H. and Grace Newton Anthony in 1916, Anthony skipped a grade in elementary school and attended high school in Haverhill, Massachusetts. There he played the saxophone in the school band, and graduated in 1933 at the age of 16.[1] In 1938 Anthony graduated from Colby College, and in 1942 received his master's degree in business administration from Harvard, and in 1952 his Doctor of Commercial Science degree.

    Anthony was a Harvard Business School faculty member from 1940 to 1982. In 1942 he became research assistant to Ross G. Walker (1891-1970), Harvard Professor of Business Administration since 1936. After his service in the US Navy from 1943 to 1946 he returned to Harvard, where he was appointed Full professor in 1956.
