    James Stephens' birth is somewhat shrouded in mystery. Stephens himself claimed to have been born on the same day and same year as James Joyce (2 February ), whereas he is in fact probably the same James Stephens who is on record as being born at the Rotunda Hospital, Dublin, on 9 February , the son of Francis Stephens (c.&#;–/3) of 5 Thomas's Court, Dublin, a vanman and a messenger for a stationer's office, and his wife, Charlotte Collins (born c.&#;).[2] His father died when Stephens was two years old, and when he was six years old, his mother remarried, and Stephens was committed to the Meath Protestant Industrial School for Boys in Blackrock[3] for begging on the streets, where he spent much of the rest of his childhood.[2] He attended school with his adoptive brothers Thomas and Richard (Tom and Dick) Collins before graduating as a solicitor's clerk.     James Brunton Stephens (17 June – 29 June ) was a Scottish-born Australian poet, and author of Convict Once.[1]

    Stephens was born in Bo'ness, on the Firth of Forth, Scotland; the son of John Stephens, the parish schoolmaster, and his wife Jane, née Brunton.[1] J. B. Stephens was educated at his father's school, then at a free boarding school and at the University of Edinburgh from to without obtaining a degree.[1] For three years he was a travelling tutor on the continent, and from became a school teacher in Scotland. While teaching at Greenock Academy, Stephens wrote some minor verse and two short novels ('Rutson Morley' and 'Virtue Le Moyne') which were published in Sharpe's London Magazine in –[1]
