Three years ago Ron Capps sat on the bed in his hotel room in Sonoma and cried.
He was driving a Funny Car for Don Prudhomme and his boss had just told him that he was going to fire his crew chief, Ed “The Ace” McCulloch.
Capps was devastated.
McCulloch, who won 22 national events as a driver, was more than just a mechanic to Capps. He was the guiding force behind his career, the one guy who Capps believed could finally turn him into a champion.
Now, Capps was suddenly alone, and he just couldn’t seem to get up to speed, failing to qualify once and losing in the first round five times in seven races.
The following season didn’t go much better, either. He advanced to the semifinals in only two of his 21 starts. He lost both and finished 12th in the points race, his worst showing as a Funny Car driver.
“When it didn’t work out for Ed at Prudhomme’s,” Capps said, “I I was crushed.”
In , the two were reunited at Don Schumacher Racing and have become the driving force in Funny Cars.
After winning five of his seven final-round appearances this season, Capps, 41, enters Friday’s first-round qualifying for the Mile-High Nationals in first place in the driver standings, holding a point lead over time class champi

Funny car bodies typically reflect the models of newly available cars in the time period that the funny car was built. For example, in the s, then current models such as the Chevrolet Vega or Plymouth Barracuda were often represented as funny cars, and the bodies represented the Big Three of General Motors, Ford, and Chrysler.[2] Currently, four manufacturers are represented in National Hot Rod Association (NHRA) Funny Car: Chevrolet with the Camaro,[3]Dodge with the Charger,[4]Ford with the Mustang,[5] and Toyota with the Supra.[6] Worldwide, however, many different body styles are used. These "fake" body shells are not just cosmetic; they serve an important aerodynamic purpose.[7] Modern funny cars can ri
