Born Layne Thomas Staley August 22, 1967 in Kirkland, Washington, Layne grew up the child of divorced parents. Layne showed his musical talents early and began playing drums at the age of 12. Not long after developing a love for bands like Black Sabbath and The Doors Layne took up singing. In 1987 Layne met Jerry Cantrell at a party and a great musical collaboration was born. After hooking up with Sean Kinney and Mike Starr Alice N Chanyz a Van Halen-esque 80's glam band was born. Not long after seeing other Seattle bands ditching this persona they evolved into the much more original and less showy Alice In Chains.
Layne's haunting and soulful vocal styling helped to set AIC apart form other Seattle bands and helped in landing them a recording contract with Columbia Records in 1989. Their first album Facelift was released in 1990 and the band began massive touring to help build a solid fan base. In the January of 1991 "Man In The Box" was released and catapulted AIC to the top.
